# ACC vs MCP Agent Mail: Session Conversation or Shared Mailbox?

ACC connects independent local sessions you already run. The Rust MCP Agent Mail implementation organizes collaboration around persistent identities, searchable threads, and an archive.

## Begin with the shared problem

An implementation session has a question for another session. The answer should remain attributable and recoverable after the immediate exchange.

Both tools keep messages available after the immediate exchange. ACC addresses participating client sessions; Agent Mail supplies persistent mail-style identities and archived threads.

## Compare the surrounding record

The [Agent Mail documentation](https://github.com/Dicklesworthstone/mcp_agent_mail_rust) describes mail-style identities and threads, search, advisory reservations, a Git-backed archive, SQLite indexing, and TUI, web, and CLI operator surfaces.

ACC records participants, sessions, messages, receipts, intent, claims, and handoffs. It keeps runtime state outside repositories and does not require Git.

Agent Mail keeps its archive in per-project Git repositories under its storage root.

| Need | ACC approach | Agent Mail feature to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Ask an existing peer a question | Cross-client roster and threaded message. | Persistent identity and mailbox workflow. |
| Inspect a historical exchange | Bounded history reads and exact-message retrieval. | Archive and search interfaces. |
| Coordinate edits | Intent plus advisory or eligible guarded claims. | Reservations and documented guard behavior. |
| Inspect as a human operator | CLI observations and delivery facts. | TUI and web interfaces. |

The meaningful choice concerns the workflow around the message, rather than whether a mailbox is inherently better or worse.

## Give each product the same practical task

Use an API contract question between the clients you intend to keep. Identify the receiver, send the question, return an answer, then recover the conversation after the receiver restarts.

For ACC, record the receiving mode. A message may wait for a normal turn or explicit inbox access; an eligible opted-in live path can act sooner. A queued receipt alone does not prove that the model considered the request.

Record the equivalent observations in the other setup using its recommended configuration. Do not convert a different vocabulary into a reliability claim without checking what its receipt establishes.

## Consider an archive as a product requirement

If you need a mailbox-centered operator experience, make that a first-class evaluation criterion. If you mainly need a peer to answer a dependency question in your ordinary coding session, prioritize the session integration and the path back to work.

ACC also supports [handoffs](/guides/handoff-after-rate-limit/). It transfers explicitly reported context, not the source agent's entire conversation.

## Next step

Run one useful exchange before choosing a broader coordination routine. The [ACC connection guide](/guides/connect-ai-coding-sessions/) supplies that first task. The [category guide](/compare/agent-communication-tools/) includes alternatives when your requirement goes beyond a local pair of independent sessions.
